Cannabinoids 101: A Beginner’s Guide to CBD, THC and More

Cannabinoids can sound complicated. They do not have to be. These naturally occurring compounds are one part of the cannabis plant, and different cannabinoids can interact with the body in different ways. You have probably heard of CBD and THC, but the plant contains many other cannabinoids too.

What are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that can interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Some are produced by the cannabis plant and are often called phytocannabinoids. The human body also makes its own cannabinoid-like signaling molecules, called endocannabinoids.

The endocannabinoid system is involved in communication across the body. Researchers continue to study its role in processes such as mood, sleep, appetite, memory, stress response and discomfort. That does not mean every cannabinoid product will produce the same result—or that a product is proven to treat a medical condition.

Product effects can vary based on the cannabinoid, dose, serving size, product format, other ingredients, individual sensitivity and previous experience.

CBD vs. THC: the simple distinction

CBD and THC come from the same plant family, but they are not interchangeable. THC can produce an intoxicating “high.” CBD generally does not. Both can affect the brain and body, and both can cause side effects or interact with other substances.

If you are sensitive to THC, want to avoid intoxication or may be subject to drug testing, read labels carefully. Products described as full spectrum may contain THC. A product labeled “THC-free” is a better starting point, but no label or test can guarantee the outcome of a workplace drug test.

Full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate

Full spectrum

Contains multiple compounds from the hemp or cannabis plant and may include THC. Check the product label and certificate of analysis for the amount in each serving.

Broad spectrum

Contains multiple plant compounds but is typically formulated without detectable THC. Manufacturing standards and testing thresholds vary, so verify the current lab report.

Isolate

Uses one isolated cannabinoid, such as CBD isolate. This can be useful for shoppers who prefer a simpler formula, although other ingredients and manufacturing quality still matter.

Why product format matters

The cannabinoid is only part of the decision. Format affects how you use a product, how quickly you may notice it and how long the experience may last.

• Edibles and capsules: convenient and pre-measured, but they may take longer to feel. Avoid taking more too quickly.
• Tinctures and oral sprays: flexible serving sizes and easy routine-building. Follow the label for placement and timing.
• Topicals and roll-ons: applied directly to the skin for a targeted routine. Do not use on broken skin unless the label allows it.
• Drinks and shots: familiar and portable, with effects that depend on the formula and serving size.
• Smokeables and inhaled products: faster onset but not appropriate for every customer; inhalation carries additional health considerations.
